I bought this drive specifically to expand my Series 3 tivo. I have had the drive running in the enclose for 8 months and aside from power outages theis drive has never failed in the Antec MX-1 enclose that I have it in. After doing some research, i settled on this one because of its price, performance, and that its noise levels. There are drives specifically made to handle continuous operation. When ther TV is off and nothing else is running, I do hear some access noises, but comapred to other desktop drives I have, even from WD, this one is pretty quiet. there is one other drive (can't rememeber model designation) that is specifically for DVR's and digital survailance systems that are constantly writing to the disk that is supposed to perorm better and quiter, but it was almost 50% more at the time I made my purchase.I would defiinitely recommend this drive and if you are getting and external, heck out the MX-1
But, I will consider a "used or like new" drive because you can get a better deal. I own an HPMV2120 with one 500GB hard drive. I chose this drive because it was compatible with my server. I never buy reconditioned or refurbished drives simply because you don't really know what you are getting in quality. Go for WD drive when you are in the market for a new drive. I now have a whopping 925.25 GB of space.
I did have a bit of problem (at first) installing it but I realized that the process once read by the manual, the process is very easy. When I found myself downloading music and videos and other things to keep, I realized very soon that my storage space was getting low and I was looking to expand my server. So overall I am very happy with this drive. I again will be looking to expand he drive in the near future with two external drives. I usually don't buy used drives as a rule of thumb but when I saw the price, I knew that it was the right one for me. Configuring the drive was a pice of cake.
I haven't had any problems with drives to speak of.
Bought this in July 07 when it had only a year warranty on them, They change to a three year in Aug 07. Mine died at christmas so there is no warranty. Only is I had know I would of waited another month for the extra 2 years. Must be why I got a great price on this paper weight back then.
I installed two of these sATA internal drives in my Power Mac G5 about a week ago. Installation was easy and so far they have functioned flawlessly.
Using as a backup drive in a Netwrok Attached Storage (NAS)Works as advertised. No issues and its one of two I installed in the NAS.
